Dan Rountree has been painting full time for over twelve years. He works at his studio located in a historic setting of a small town located on the Black Warrior River.
Northport, Alabama looks like a town untouched by the 21st century with a main street occupied by a barber shop, Five & Dime Store, and a real hardware store. Yet, 11 artists have located their studios or galleries there. Rountree Studio is located on 5th Street right across the street from an old mill with water wheel intact.
Dan has continued to study art since he earned his
master's degree in 1975. He has taken classes with some of the finest artists in the United States. Dan has treasured the opportunities to study with:

Yet, none of these artists have influenced his work as much as Joan Potter (http:/ / morris- whiteside.com/Potter.htm). More than 20 years ago, Dan traveled to Santa Fe to study with her. Over the years, their friendship has grown with many trips to Santa Fe and Joan even coming to Alabama to teach a workshop. Joan has become Dan's Mentor and has had a great influence on his painting.
Dan earned his B.S. from a state university in Alabama. He accepted a full scholarship to earn his master's degree in Nashville, Tennessee. While living in the heart of country music, he worked part-time as a on set sketch artist for "Hee-Haw", a popular television program in the 1970's. One of the stars, Archie Campbell became a friend and they often painted together on trips into the SmokeyMountains.
An internship with a radio station in Nashville gave him the unique opportunity to produce sketches of musicians as they were being interviewed or while recording in a record studio. Over the years, Dan completed pencil drawings of many music celebrities such as: Perry Como, Aretha Franklin, June Carter Cash, Johnny Cash, Chris Kristoferson, Ringo Star and The Beatles, Helen Reddy, Dolly Parton. and Authur Fielder and the Boston Pops Orchestra
In 1973, Dan moved to Italy to complete the research for his master's thesis. He spent his time drawing and photographing ancient architecture of Rome. This formative year was the beginning of his plein air painting. Over the years, it has become a joy for him to paint outdoors. Some of his favorite places to paint include:
Santa Fe, New Mexico; Kauai, Hawaii; Greece; St.
Maartin, New York's central park and rural Alabama.
As a child, Dan grew up on a military base where families were transferred in and out. His Dad was a
Civil Servant who stayed in the same job and was never transferred away from the base in North Alabama.
Dan's earliest memories of art are from his elementary school- so small that two or three grades were housed together in one room. Dan often got into trouble and was sent to "time out". He slyly hid a pencil and a pad of drawing paper under the piano. Then, he happily spent his "time out" punishment hidden from the teacher's view behind the piano.. ..drawing! Fifty years later, he is still a fervent believer that drawing is the basis for painting.
Dan's graduate school scholarship was from the United Methodist Church for Christian
Education. He became a minister in 1975 and served churches in Tennessee and Alabama until his retirement at the age of 47. ., During years of ministry, Dan had limited time to paint, sculpture, and draw. However, each year he took time away for two trips. One wasI to travel to study under an artist that he admired and the other trip was to paint plein air at a beautiful place in the world.
Dan served as a Diaconal Minister for the United Methodist Church for 25 years. His primary role as minister was in education with a major focus on Liturgical Art and the use of art in the church. He has taught workshops and been a guest lecturer at national conferences. He is invited to speak on Art in th£ Church, as well as Communicating th£ Faith Through Floral Design.
Dan is a devoted father to his six children. He has been married to Barbara for 35 years. Barbara is an educator and Professor Emeritas at The University of Alabama. Her work as an innovative educator is profiled in the March, 2006 issue of a national magazine, Edutopia. http://www.edutopia.ora/pdfs/mar 06/darinadozen2006.pdf They live in a 105 year-old Victorian home in Alabama with their three youngest children.
Commissions: . Atlanta Olympic Committee commissioned several pieces of art for the city of Atlanta
as the setting for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
. A "towboat" was the subject of a painting commissioned by a major bank. Often
incorrectly called "tug boats", these towboats maneuver barges loaded with coal down
the Black Warrior River to Mobile, Alabama. Mercedes-Benz commissioned 30 massive paintings for the opening of their only plant
located in the United States. He also painted six 12' x24' murals for the German Venue
for the soccer events for the Atlanta Olympics.
